This is a great way to get started on designing and making visually striking light reflective shapes, contours and textures in both clear and coloured glass. The process involves cutting a stencil like pattern, image or design in ceramic fibre and stacking to various depths. Sheet glass is then placed on top and the work is fired in the kiln. During the firing the glass will slump into the lower areas and pick up the detail to create sculpted ‘bas’ or low relief. You can achieve some beautiful and interesting shapes, patterns and lens effects with this relatively simple process.
What you will learn:
- How to select and use your choice of design for the purpose
- How to prepare refractory materials
- How to design and create contour and low relief of different depths in glass
- Appropriate firing and annealing cycles
What you will achieve:
- Several useful samples in clear and colour that can be starting points for further designs
- One completed light reflective glass panel with contour and slumped low relief
Things to bring:
- A sharp scalpel knife & extra blades
- A sharp pair of scissors
- Stencil designs and/or favourite sources of inspiration
- A packed lunch
